Citadel Fladstrand

Imagine the coast near present-day Frederikshavn 400 years ago: no town, no harbor, just wind, waves, and small fishing villages scattered along the shoreline. The largest was called Fladstrand. Beneath the surface, something greater was beginning to take shape. During the dramatic Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), when German troops marched through Denmark, the foundation for something new was laid. They built a defensive position: Nordre Skanse, followed shortly by Søndre Skanse, roughly where the naval base is today. This marked the beginning of Fladstrand's transformation from a quiet fishing village to a strategic fortress town.

In 1686, the two redoubts were connected by an impressive fortification: Citadel Fladstrand. This citadel played a central role in the Great Northern War (1709-1720), the English Wars (1807-1814), and put Fladstrand on the military map. But why was the citadel built here? What impact did it have on the area? And are there still traces of it today? All this and more can be explored together with the museum's guide during August, as we tell the fascinating story of Fladstrand and the secrets of the citadel.
