Story of the Month: Seeking Fortune - Emigration to America

ons. 08. jul. 2026 kl. 13:00-13:30 Kystmuseet

Between 1850 and 1920, approximately 300,000 Danes emigrated to America to start a new life. Most traveled with hopes of freedom, happiness, and prosperity. Many left poverty and lack of land in Denmark for the promise of free farmland in America. In July, we share the story of these emigrants, many from Vendelbo, who left everything behind in pursuit of a better life.

Over a period of 70 years, from 1850 to 1920, around 300,000 Danes emigrated to America to begin anew. Most set out with hopes for a better life filled with freedom, happiness, and wealth. Some fled a past marked by crime, while others sought the freedom to practice their religion in America, something not possible in Denmark at the time. This number represented about 10% of Denmark's population then. They left widespread poverty and land scarcity in Denmark, attracted by the offer of free farmland in America if they were willing to cultivate it. While a few became wealthy, most endured hard labor to survive. However, the land they worked was their own, unlike in Denmark where they served landlords. This made the hardship worthwhile. In July, we tell the story of the many Danes who crossed the Atlantic, coming from all over the country, with a significant number from Vendelbo who left all they knew for the dream of a better life.
