Wine & Knowledge: How Can H.C. Andersen Help Us Through the Climate Crisis?

ons. 09. dec. 2026 kl. 17:00-19:00 Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg

What can a 19th-century author teach us about one of today's greatest challenges? And how do we translate that knowledge into the green transition?

In this edition of Wine & Knowledge, literature and energy research come together to explore humanity's relationship with nature. We begin by delving into H.C. Andersen's works and the Golden Age's view of nature to examine how ideas from the past can offer new perspectives on the climate crisis. Following this, we explore the technologies, solutions, and challenges shaping the transition to an energy system based on renewable sources. H.C. Andersen and the Golden Age's View of Nature What can H.C. Andersen's authorship tell us about the climate crisis? Torsten Bøgh Thomsen investigates how the Golden Age's perception of nature continues to influence our understanding of nature and humanity's place within it. Drawing on both well-known and lesser-known works by H.C. Andersen, he examines the role of nature in 19th-century literature, the shift from a romantic to a scientific understanding of nature, and the ethical questions arising from the interaction between humans and their environment. The Green Transition in the Energy Sector How do we transition our energy supply from fossil fuels to renewable energy? Mads Pagh Nielsen provides insight into the technologies, challenges, and interdisciplinary solutions driving the green transition. The presentation focuses, among other things, on how the energy system can adapt to a future where production depends on solar and wind power, and introduces Aalborg University's new interdisciplinary Energy-Hub, which aims to enhance education and communication about future energy systems.
